DRY/ WET Rot and Timber TREATMENT
Dry Rot
Dry rot (serpula lacrymans) is a specific type of wood destroying fungus. Because it has a reputation for attacking wood, depleting it and potentially making timber unsafe in buildings it has gained the unpleasant nickname ‘building cancer’.
WHAT CAUSES
DRY ROT?
Dry Rot develops on timber in damp and humid conditions. You may spot a fruiting body, which looks like a mushroom with a pizza like appearance. You may also find cotton wool-like growth, called Mycelium, that could have water droplets on it. As it spreads across the timber’s surface, the strands inside feed on the timber and supply the fungus with water and nutrients to help it grow.
Once the fungus spreads onto the surface of adjacent stone or brick walls, things may start to become more serious as the threads penetrate nearby mortar joints and plaster, in search of another food source i.e. more timber.
HOW WE TREAT
DRY ROT?
It's important to know the type of rot you're dealing with. A specialist survey will do this for you – and it could save you valuable time and money in the long run.
It’s critical to treat wood rotting fungi before it spreads, by eliminating the source of moisture. Maintaining low moisture levels allows the structure to dry and stops the rot’s spores from spreading and germinating.
Rot treatments are always dictated by site conditions and our surveyors will be able to help and advise you on this.
